On Yunnan


The 26 ethnic minorities that make their home in Yunnan are the Achang, Bai, Benglong, Bonan, Bulang, Dai, De'ang, Drung, Dulong. Hani (Akha), Hui, Jinuo, Jingpo (Kachin in Burma), Lahu, Lisu, Miao (Hmong), Mongols, Naxi, Nu, Pumi, She, Tibetans, Wa, Yao, Yi, and Zhuang.


The Yunnan Stone Forest (Shilin) is a popular tourist destination for Chinese, who call it the "Chicken Forest." Often swamped by Chinese bus tourists, the site also includes a polluted lake, temples, lots of litter, souvenirs, food stands, and ethnic minorities displayed like zoo animals. Yi tribesmen live in the area. Eight miles the stone forest is a large area of mushroom-shaped rock pillars called the Fungi Forest, which cover 300 hectares and features a waterfall.
